What is the speaker & author resource group (SARG)?
The SARG is a pool of volunteers from USFN member firms/organizations interested in being considered for future speaking and/or writing opportunities, both in-person and virtual.
What does it mean to "join" the SARG?
Joining simply means adding your name to a list of potential contributors. There is no cost, no obligation to accept future opportunities, and you only participate when you're available and interested.
is this different from being a member of usfn?
Yes. Being part of the SARG means you’re expressing interest in volunteering your time and expertise as a speaker or author. Generally, you must be employed by a USFN member firm/organization to participate.
what kinds of opportunities might i be asked to participate in?
SARG members may be invited to speak on panels, moderate sessions, or write articles for the USFN Report or USFNews. All contributions are optional and based on interest and availability.
TIME COMMITMENT & RESPONSIBILITIES
what is the time commitment for speaking opportunities?
Moderators typically spend 9–10 hours preparing: reviewing outlines, collaborating with panelists, managing slide decks, and leading the session.
Panelists usually spend 7–8 hours: contributing to content development, attending planning meetings, and participating in the event.
what is the time commitment for writing opportunities?
USFN Report authors should plan for 2–3 hours to write a 1,500–1,600-word article.
USFNews authors generally spend 1–2.5 hours writing a 500–600-word article.
All authors also submit a topic, review style guides, complete a release form, and respond to feedback.
will i have to come up with topics or outlines on my own?
Typically, no.
For speaking engagements: session titles, descriptions, and outlines are usually prepared in advance by a USFN committee. As a speaker, you’ll simply be asked to develop slides or talking points for your portion.
For writing engagements: article topic submissions are always welcome on interesting case law updates, industry trends, or other issues you may have a personal interest in, but oftentimes, topics and subject matter are also suggested by the Publications Committee and just need willing writers.
COMMON CONCERNS
what if i've never spoken or written for usfn before?
That’s perfectly okay! New contributors are welcomed and supported. We often pair newer participants with experienced mentors to help guide you through the process—just let us know that’s what you’d like when you commit to the opportunity.
what if i'm asked to speak or write on something unfamiliar?
We work to align your invitations with your experience and areas of interest. You always have the option to decline or ask clarifying questions before committing.
will i be expected to do this on my own?
No. Sessions are collaborative, and you’ll work alongside fellow panelists or co-authors. You’ll also receive preparation resources and support from the USFN team
i'm nervous about speaking or writing - should I still sign up?
Absolutely. This is a great way to stretch your skills in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Let us know if you’d like extra support—we’ll work with you.
why should i participate? what's in it for me?
Participating helps you grow professionally, gain visibility, build relationships across the industry, and add to your resume. It also contributes to your firm's recognition within the USFN community.
how can firms leverage the sarg for professional development?
SARG participation aligns well with firm goals for staff development. Many firms use SARG involvement as part of internal review and recognition processes, including tracking points toward the Award of Excellence(AOE).
ROSTERS, CONTACTS & ONGOING INVOLVEMENT
who manages our firm's sarg participants?
Each firm should assign a key contact to regularly review and update its SARG roster in USFN’s database. This ensures your team receives timely opportunities and that contact information stays current.
how often should we update the roster?
Ideally, updates should be made at least once per quarter.
can seasoned speakers help add new voices to the sarg?
Yes! Encourage associates and colleagues to join by highlighting the benefits—networking, learning, exposure, and a stronger voice for your firm/organization within the industry.
are there different ways to engage for newer vs more experienced members?
Definitely. Newer members might prefer writing as a first step, while seasoned professionals may moderate panels or mentor others. Let us know what kind of support or experience you’re looking for.
Not necessarily. You’ll be added to the pool and contacted when a relevant opportunity arises. You’re always free to decline if the timing or topic isn’t right.
can this be included in firm/organization-wide communications or orientation?
Yes! We encourage firms/organizations to include SARG info in internal newsletters, all-hands meetings, and new staff onboarding materials.
